AMSOIL For Marine Applications
What's the unique problem of the marine engine? Water. Water promotes rust, corrosion and rapid wear. Freshwater-cooled boats operate cool, which promotes in-engine condensation and rust. Closed-system marine engines tend to operate very hot, which promotes the creation of acids - and engine corrosion. The longer the engine works, the more water and acid build, and the acid and water continue to work after engine shutdown.
Inboard Marine Gas Engines
AMSOIL Synthetic Engine Oils
AMSOIL synthetic engine oils shield engine parts from rust and continuously neutralize engine oil acids. They are ideal for use during operations and lay-up. Additionally, AMSOIL synthetic motor oils are formulated for extended drain i ntervals. In fact, many AMSOIL product users base their oil changes on the findings of used oil analysis instead of hours, a critical benefit in operations where time is money and oil changes are difficult.
AMSOIL synthetic motor oils are extended drain capable because they are synthetic oils. Synthetics are much more resistant to heat, oxidation and mechanical breakdown than are conventional oils, which helps synthetic last longer than conventional oils last.
AMSOIL synthetic motor oils are formulated with long-lasting, top-quality additives to take advantage of the durability of synthetic basestocks, and make extended drain capable oils. Finally, synthetic oils offer superior lubrication and protection to that offered by conventional oils, due to the ability of synthetics to maintain low temperature fluidity for rapid post-startup lubrication and protection and their ability to maintain a durable film of protection in high temperature operations.
Engine Oil By-Pass Filter
Hard-working
engines come in all shapes and sizes, from
heavy-duty diesels to high performance
racing engines. Though seldom recognized as
part of this group, marine engines include
some of the hardest working, hottest running
engines out there.Marine engines, from
those found in recreational watercraft to
larger commercial boats, often sit idle in
storage for weeks or months and when put on
the water are required to run at full
throttle for extended periods of time. These
torturous conditions place tremendous stress
on engines and engine oils. Since clean
engine oil is critical for ensuring proper
operation and protection, AMSOIL recommends
the use of the Marine Dual Remote Filtration
System (BMK-18).
The AMSOIL Dual Remote and By-Pass
filtration systems have been an integral
part of the company's advanced engine
protection product line. Building on the
customer-proven success of automotive dual
remote and by-pass filtration technology,
the Marine Dual Remote Filtration System was
created to address the specific severe
operating environment of marine engines in
both salt and fresh water. For example the
hose fittings are coated with a 3 ml layer
of Alumiplate™ and 1 ml of zinc and yellow
chromate. Standard hydraulic fittings
typically survive for 96 hours in the
grueling ASTM B-117 Salt Spray Test. When we
subjected the Alumiplate™ coated AMSOIL
Marine Bypass System fittings to this
critical corrosion resistance test protocol,
they lasted over 1,000 hours! This means the
Alumiplate™ coating on the fittings of the
AMSOIL Marine Bypass Filtration System are
10 times more corrosion resistant than
standard zinc and yellow chromate plated
fittings. While this exclusive Alumiplate™
coating process is expensive, AMSOIL felt
this extra margin of system protection was
absolutely necessary to provide marine
application customers with extraordinary
corrosion resistance and protection - and
the peace of mind that goes with knowing
that the AMSOIL Marine Bypass System is
engineered for demanding marine
applications. Also, the fasteners and
mounting bracket are stainless steel, and
the hose are U.S. Coast Guard approved.
The
effects of marine engines running
predominantly at or near full throttle after
extended periods of non-activity include
high operating temperatures and increased
potential for wear on engine components. The
AMSOIL Marine Dual Remote Filtration System
offers a clear advantage by providing better
oil filtration, increased oil capacity,
longer oil and filter life, plus the ability
to remove water from the lubrication system.
Moisture typically condenses inside engines
to combine with residual combustion gases.
The resulting compounds strip beneficial
additives from engine oil and act as
corrosive substances that further degrade
the engine oil and promote engine wear.
Humid environments make marine engines
especially prone to these conditions. The
BMK-18 greatly curbs the effects of moisture
and condensation by safely retaining water
within the filtration system.
Dual remote filtration is a highly
efficient filtering process capable of
removing the vast majority of wear causing
particles which are in the 5-20 micron
range. It also has the ability to
effectively remove particles down to 1
micron in size. Furthermore, a dual remote
filtration system requires a 1.5 to 2 quart
oil volume increase, with the added oil
offering increased cooling capabilities. The
additional hoses, fittings, filters and
aluminum mount assemblies also allow the
engine oil to dissipate heat more
efficiently as it passes through the
filtration system, extending the service
life of both the engine and the engine oil.
A
large number of marine diesel engines have
by-pass oil filtration systems installed by
the engine manufacturer. Until now, however,
this technology has not been available to
smaller pleasure boats and light commercial
marine applications.
Depending on the owner's frequency of
use, the improved filtration of the Marine
Dual Remote system, along with the use of
AMSOIL's synthetic lubricants, could
completely eliminate oil and filter changes
during a typical boating season.
With marine engines located in a
relatively confined and remote space within
the watercraft, ease of filter access and
reduced oil spillage are significant
benefits of the Marine Dual Remote System.
The remote mount of the BMK-18 is also
compatible with the new AMS-Oiler™ Oil
Precharger (AMK-01)
for added engine protection during the
frequent dry starting that is typical of
marine engines that sit idle for even short
periods of time.
The
BMK-18 is packaged in kit form, which
includes the Dual filter mount, mounting
hardware, hoses, hose fittings, component
parts and installation instructions. In
addition, adapter kits of four different
sizes enable the BMK-18 to be installed on a
wide variety of recreational and light
commercial marine engines. The BMK-18 kit
offers a new heavy duty, machined aluminum
adapter and retaining nut that fits on the
existing oil filter mount. Each adapter kit
is application specific and must be ordered
separately. Please consult
BMK-18 Adapter Kit Reference Guide (G-2051)
for specific applications. Adapter kits are
available for the most popular filter thread
sizes. When ordering the BMK-18 request one
of the following adapter kits:
- BK-195 for ¾” x 16 thread
- BK-196 for 13/16” x 16 thread
- BK-197 for 18 mm x 1.5 mm thread
- BK-198 for 20 mm x 1.5 mm thread
Also, for ease of installation in some
applications, optional 90 degree fittings
(BK-199 and BK-200) can be mounted on the
filter adapter collar. These parts are also
sold separately.
The AMSOIL Marine Dual Remote Filtration
System represents the cutting edge of
filtration technology-another example of
AMSOIL's commitment to providing quality
innovations that can benefit consumers
everywhere.

Fisherman Saves Time and Money
We fish three to six days at a time, sometimes trawling 24 hours a day. The engine runs at continuous load most of the time, which is ideal for a Detroit Diesel. But
there's no getting around it we really work that engine.
AMSOIL Heavy Duty Diesel and Marine Oil and the AMSOIL Dual Gard filter give me the outstanding protection I demand and the extended drain intervals I want. I appreciate the savings in time and money.
Commercial fisherman Paul Daniels switched his Detroit Diesel 525 hp 12V-71T boat main engine over to AMSOIL Synthetic 15W-40 Heavy Duty Diesel and Marine Oil and an AMSOIL Dual Gard By-Pass Oil Filter to increase engine life and decrease maintenance. Daniels had been changing his conventional oil at 250- to 300-hour intervals. With AMSOIL products on board, he conservatively increased his change intervals until he reached his present 2000 hour oil changes with sampling and filter changes at 500 hours.
Engine Life Increases 500 Percent
More than 60,000 tourists annually visit Alpine Canyons, South Island, New Zealand for high-speed thrills on Shotover Jet Ltd.
jet boats. The tourist trade is tough service for the boats. The Chevrolet 454 cu. in. V8-engined
jet boats are in service 365 days a year, making up to 28 high speed river trips a day. The boats develop maximum torque at extremely low engine operating temperatures, due to the cooling effect of the snow-fed river water they draw. How does Shotover protect these hard-working engines?
With AMSOIL synthetic motor oils and AMSOIL by-pass oil filters. Before converting the boats to AMSOIL motor oil and filters and propane fuel, oil change intervals were at 25 hours and engine life in the 500 hour range. The propane fuel, AMSOIL synthetic motor oil and AMSOIL by-pass oil filter combination provides 400-hour oil change intervals and engine life up to 2500 hours
that's 16 times greater oil service life and five times greater engine life a huge savings for Shotover Jet Ltd.

HP Injector is a precise
synthetic formulation that exceeds the
lubrication demands of modern two-cycle
motors. Today's two-cycle outboard motors
operate at higher temperatures and at leaner
oil and fuel ratios than older motors. This
difficult operating environment requires
proper lubrication technology to keep motors
running long and strong. HP Injector is a
premium lubricant engineered with AMSOIL
synthetic base oils and MAXDOSE
advanced additives. It contains up
to 30 percent more additives than other
TC-W3 two-cycle oils for "super clean"
operation. And because AMSOIL synthetic oils
are more durable, they are perfect for lean
mixture operations. In addition, this AMSOIL
exclusive product produces low smoke and
odor and has low aquatic toxicity
properties, making it ideal for boats.
HP Injector improves
engine life. It prevents engine damage from
deposits that cause ring sticking and ring
jacking (carbon build-up behind the ring,
forcing it outward), a phenomenon that
occurs in modern DFI outboard motors. HP
Injector reduces wear. It has excellent
lubricity properties and provides a good
lubricating oil film, protecting pistons and
bearings. HP Injector inhibits rust, an
important feature where motors are subjected
to water. HP Injector provides superior
performance in direct fuel injected (DFI),
electronic fuel injected (EFI) and
carbureted outboard motors, as well as other
recreational equipment.

Marine gear oils operate
in environments subject to water
contamination. The chart below demonstrates
the ability of AMSOIL Universal Synthetic
Marine Gear Lube to maintain designed
qualities such as extreme pressure/anti-wear
performance and resistance to foaming, even
when subjected to 10% water contamination.
The Falex Procedure is
measurement of a gear lube's extreme
pressure and anti-wear properties. A high
value in the Falex Extreme Pressure Test
relates to extra extreme pressure
protection. AMSOIL Universal Synthetic
Marine Gear Lube is not affected by water
and provides 50% more extreme pressure
protection for long gear and bearing life.
The presence of foam in a
lubricant disrupts oil film and promotes
wear. Water contamination can increase the
likelihood of foaming. Industry standard
testing demonstrates zero foam in both new
and water-contaminated AMSOIL Universal
Synthetic Marine Gear Lube. Other
conventional gear lubes can foam when mixed
with water, as seen in the graph.

AMSOIL Gave Me Mor e Power
David A. Zgrabik owns a guide service and is also a tournament angler. His success depends on the reliability of his equipment. I started the year with only 10 trips booked, said Zgrabik, and when was said and done I ended up with I already have 12 booked for the coming year!
Zgrabik also made the most of his opportunities to fish in tournaments. He said, I have to say it was not a year, with five first place awards and three big bass awards.
After starting to run AMSOIL Series 2000 2-Cycle Racing Oil in my motor, I noticed considerably less smoke at startup, improved idling and more power. I even have an unexplainable 200 rpm increase! There is no way I would without my AMSOIL motor oil now!
